Pech Merle

The Cave of Peche Merle is among the world’s most unique tourism destinations. In contrast to the reproductions of its sister cave Lascaux Corrèze, the original cave and paintings remain open to the public. Visitors are allowed see about a third of the two kilometers long galleries, comprised of seven large halls with a stunning series of pre-historic works of art dating to the Gravettian culture (some 25,000 years ago). Visitors are left stunned by not only the arc of time and eerie connection to a lost time but by the quality of the art itself. The number of visitors is limited to 700 per day in order to preserve the cave. Tours of the cave run approximately one hour long. Reservations are recommended at least three or four days in advance during the high-season in July and August.
